Ice Cream Cone Pillow Tutorial - Finished Seams Method
TIP:
When sewing the ice cream cone pillow using the finished seams method, for best results and ease of construction, I recommend cutting out the pattern pieces on the bias of the fabric. This will make pinning and sewing the curved seams of the cone and scoop much easier. If you prefer to cut the pattern pieces out on grain of the fabric, then it may be necessary to clip the curves within the seam allowance before pinning and sewing the pieces together.
The tutorial shown below depicts a double scoop ice cream cone pillow. A single scoop ice cream cone pillow may be sewn the same way but without the middle section of fabric (bottom scoop pattern piece).
Step 1: Cut out 2 of each pattern piece: Cone, Rounded Top Scoop, Rounded Bottom Scoop. Fold each piece in half along the width and mark the center on edges where pieces will be joined.
Step 2: With right sides together and matching center marks, begin pinning the scalloped edge of the Cone to the scalloped bottom edge of the Rounded Bottom Scoop. It is easiest to pin in the middle first and work toward one side at a time, slightly stretching the curve of each piece. This may seem odd at first because the curves are in opposite directions, but trust me that it will work out once sewn together! The photo below shows the view from both sides.
Step 3: Slowly and carefully stitch the two pieces together. It will be necessary to pause after every two or three stitches to make sure that the fabric underneath hasn't folded over and gotten in the seam. When you stop to check the fabric and sometimes pull it or reposition it, always be sure to end with the neeedle in the down position. Once the seam is sewn, clip the curve in the seam allowance making sure not to clip the threads. This will give the fabric a bit more stretch.
Step 4: With right sides together, now pin the Rounded Bottom Scoop top edge to the Rounded Top Sccop bottom edge. Follow the same process as you did in Step 2 for pinning these pieces together.
Step5: Follow the instructions from Step 3 to sew the curved seam. Clip the curves when finished.
Step 6: Press the seams toward the Cone section. Give it a good press from both sides using steam.
Step 7: Repeat Steps 2-6 for the remaining pillow pieces.
Step 8: Place the two assembled ice cream cone pieces right sides together and pin. Be sure to match seams.
Step 9: Starting along one side of the Cone, sew around the edges of the pillow using a 1/4" seam allowance. Be sure to leave a roughly 2" opening for turning the pillow right side out and inserting the fiber fill. Backstitch at the beginning and ending of the seam.
Step 10: Trim the seam along the bottom of the Cone and clip all the curves.
Step 11: Turn the pillow right side out and use a wooden chopstick or bodkin to gently push out the corners and smooth the rounded seams. Turn the fabric at the opening inside and give the entire pillow cover a good press with the iron.
Step 12: Using small amounts of fiber fill at a time, begin filling the pillow. Use your fingers or the wooden chopstick to help push the fill into the narrow tip of the Cone. Once the pillow is filled to your preferred firmness, use a needle and matching thread to slip stitch the opening in the Cone closed. If desired, sew a decorative pom pom or felted wool ball onto the top of the ice cream scoop as a cheery!
The tutorial shown below depicts a single scoop ice cream cone pillow. A double scoop ice cream cone pillow may be sewn the same way but with the middle section of fabric (bottom scoop pattern piece).
Step 1: Cut out 2 of each pattern piece: Cone and Top Scoop. Fold each piece in half along the width and mark the center on edges.
Step 2: With right sides up, overlap the edges of the Top Scoop and Cone by roughly 1/4". Use the center marks as a guide when positiong the scoop on top of the cone. Pin in place then turn the ice cream cone over to make sure there are no folds in the fabric and that the spacing of the seam is even.
Step 3: Using a wide zig zag stitch, stitch the Top Scoop to the Cone by sewing as close to the scoop edge as you can. Backstitch at the beginning and ending of the seam.
Step 4: Repeat Steps 2 and 3 for the remaining ice cream cone pillow pieces.
Step 5: With wrong sides together, place the two ice cream cone pillow pieces together. Pin in place and then starting along one edge of the Cone, sew around the perimeter using a wide zig zag stitch. I switched out my thread and bobbin to match the ice cream scoop and then the cone. Be sure to leave at least a 2" opening for inserting the fiber fill. Backstitch at the start and stop of all seams.
Step 6: Using small amounts of fiber fill at a time, begin filling the pillow through the opening in the Cone. Use your fingers or the wooden chopstick to help push the fill into the narrow tip of the Cone.
Step 7: Once the pillow is filled to your preferred firmness, pin the opening closed and sew it closed using the same zig zag stitch. If desired, sew a decorative pom pom or felted wool ball onto the top of the ice cream scoop as a cheery!
