The Folklore Bag

* My Folklore Bag was just featured on Threading My Way!  Thanks, Pam!

Back in December, I checked out the book One Yard Wonders from my public library.  There were lots of great looking ideas in the book--all that can be created with just a yard of fabric.  I was interested in making a new purse (my latest obsession), and The Folklore Bag pattern caught my eye.

I had recently come across a wool remnant at Joann's that I thought would be perfect for this bag, but instead of making straps for the purse, I purchased some interesting red/burnt orange beaded handles.  Here's how it turned out:

The lining fabric was also a remnant that I found at Joann's.

I thought the whole purse went together quickly and easily.  The pattern and instructions were simple to follow, and I'd gladly make another one sometime.  I can't remember now if the pattern called for interfacing and fusible fleece, but I added both to provide the bag with more stability.

I'm pleased with how this bag turned out.  I can't decide if I want to keep it for myself or try and sell it when I open my Etsy shop later this week.  I've got enough of the wool fabric to make another one, but I'll have to look in my fabric stash for lining.

Have a great day everyone!

  1. What a great project! That turned out so beautiful. I found some fabric in my stash this weekend that I bought six years ago to make a purse out of. Ooops. I guess that's still on the to do list ;-) Thanks for sharing your finished product! I've seen that book all over the place, so maybe I need to get a copy and craft this up!

  2. 'One Yard Wonders' is full of great ideas. I have the 'One Metre Wonders' version. I really like the wollen fabric you've chosen. It would look equally good worn with a smart dress or with jeans. The beaded handles match so well... seams to bring out the coloured flecks in the fabric. I'd be keeping this one for myself and making another to sell.

  3. I have had my eye on One Yard WOnders for a while now, and after seeing your bag I think I might go and check it out at the library. The beaded handles are lovely. Thanks for sharing.

    1. One Yard Wonders really has some neat project in it, and the fact that you can check it out of the library is definitely a plus. I'm hoping my library has the newest One Yard Wonders book in soon. There are several projects in it that I want to try that I have seen reviewed on other blogs. I've also checked out some Amy Butler and other sewing books from my library. BTW, I bought the beaded handles at Joann's.
