Pillowcases for Ronald McDonald House

Recently, I was invited by the Music City Quilt Guild to help sew pillowcases for children staying at the local Ronald McDonald House. While I'm not a member of the guild (I haven't ventured into sewing quilts yet), I know several of the members and jumped at the chance to participate in a fun group sewing event. That's me holding up the pillowcase with a green edge.

Keep reading to learn more about the method/tutorial we used to sew up these pillowcases so quickly!

These pillowcases were super easy to sew, and follow this basic 15-Minute Pillowcase tutorial found on Craftsy (affiliate link).

Here's my friend Lindsay from Lindsay Sews rolling up the fabric for one of the pillowcases she sewed. Can you say Burrito?!

Riley Blake generously provided bolts of fabric for the guild to use, and while two ladies were cutting fabrics, the rest of us started assembling lots and lots of pillowcases--over 100, in fact!

While I sewed several pillowcases at the event, I spent most of my time ironing! The most fun was chatting with everyone and even winning a door prize bundle of fabric!

I used this same method late last year to sew up over 20 pillowcases for the students in my daughter's kindergarten class. It is super easy and fast and would make a great project to teach someone how to sew or how to create French seams. It's now my go-to method for sewing pillowcases!

Sewing has introduced me to such a wonderful community of kind, generous people and businesses. I am so thankful for opportunities like this one with the women of the Music City Quilt Guild, and I look forward to working with them again in the future on other charity sewing projects.

We all have ways in which we can help someone in need or brighten the day of a friend. I'm blessed that I may help others with my love of sewing!

Do you volunteer your sewing skills for any particular charity? I'd love to learn about other worthy causes, so be sure to leave me a comment!

Have FUN sewing!

  1. I do most of my sewing for Charity---I sew bibs, burp cloths, receiving blankets, washcloths and clothes for babies up to 18 months that goes to Grace Haven in Hamilton, Ontario, CA., which is run by The Salvation Army. Also diaper bags, totes, The Little Dresses for Africa pillowcase dresses and pillowcases for children in hospital, and blankets for Booth Centre, a mens facility also in Ontario, CA.
Your pillowcases are lovely!! Such beautiful fabrics and such a wonderful cause! :)
I don't have a group that I sew with, but I do belong to Caring for Canadians on Yahoo, where we all share photos and chit chat about what we are making and which groups we are supporting, almost as good as a get together!!

    1. Sheila,
Wow! You are amazing for helping out so many with your sewing talents! I've sewn dresses for Little Dresses for Africa and NICU kimono-like outfits for babies at our local children's hospital as well as several other causes. Thanks for all the info on these other organizations. I'll be sure to look them up!
