Butterfly Sling Purse for PPP

Have you seen the latest offering from Perfect Pattern Parcel (PPP)?  It's my favorite so far! All the patterns in this collection are bags and purses, and if you follow along here, then you know I love to sew those.

I was asked to participate in a blog tour for PPP #7 to promote the terrific patterns included in the bundle. Really, there are some amazing designs included in this one which made it super difficult to decide which one to sew! For the tour, however, I stuck with my absolute favorite bag designer, Janelle from Emmaline Bags, and sewed up a Butterfly Sling Purse.

Let me show you all the wonderful details of my Butterfly Sling Purse, and then I'll give you more details on the PPP purse bundle and how you can purchase it! As I mentioned, Emmaline Bag Patterns are some of my favorite bag and purse patterns of all time. I have sewn all but 2 of the designs that Janelle offers, and in fact, this Butterfly Sling Purse is the second one that I have made! It's a fairly simple to sew design that offers a lot of fun, useful features. Now, I should warn you. Since this was my second time sewing the pattern, I decided to change up a thing or two here and there to make this bag work better for me. Two of these modifications are not included in the pattern, but if you are adept at sewing purses and wallets, I'm sure you could just as easily make these changes to your bag as well. First, my Butterfly Sling Purse has the two main zipper pockets, each with its own 6 slot credit card holder. These card slots are great for organizing your store rewards cards, insurance cards, and credit cards for easy access when shopping, and the best part is you never need a separate wallet! I store dollar bills in the main part of one of these zipper pockets and then keep my loose change in the smaller zipper pocket located in the section between the two main zipper pockets.

Second, the original pattern calls for using two magnetic snaps to hold the two large zipper pockets together, but I decided to be a little daring and add an expanding panel or gusset to this middle section instead. I absolutely love how it turned out. It provides me easy access to my loose change zipper pocket as well as the slip pocket for my phone. Plus, now I have additional storage in the space between the two large zipper pockets since this area doesn't separate completely. 

I will admit that the way I created and sewed these two gusset pieces to the bag made me struggle quite a bit and made me question my reasons for doing it in the first place. But I am so, so glad that I did! However, during my struggle with the sewing the bag sides seams due to my addition of the gussets, I completely forgot to sew in the strap tabs! Ugh! There was no way I was going to pick out any part of those side seams to add them back in, so I searched through my collection of salvaged hardware and purse straps from bags and purses I bought at the Goodwill Outlet Store (read my post on Tips for Upcycling Purse Hardware). I found this awesome deep red narrow purse strap with antique brass swivel clips already attached and these two tiny antique brass d-rings. They were perfect in size and color to match the Ironwork Gray fabric from the Turkish Delight Collection from Blend Fabrics that I used for the exterior of my bag. 

All I had to do was make my strap tabs narrower and attach them to the back of the bag making sure I didn't sew on the card slots. Honestly, I like how this strap is attached better than the original design, so it's a happy mistake for me! Yay!

Where I stitched the tabs on the outside is barely visible from the inside!

Plus, the strap can be removed and the Butterfly Sling Purse can be used as a clutch bag!
