The Lexi Peplum Top and Dress Pattern is one of the amazing patterns included in The Sew Fab Pattern Bundle Sale that ends later today! The sale is a great way to try out patterns from designers that you haven't used before without investing a lot of money, or if you are familiar with most of the designers, then you know you're getting an amazing deal regardless!
This particular pattern calls for knits, so I searched my stash and found this fun, fruity print I picked up as remnants from Joann's. I used some hot pink ribbed knit for the neck binding and sleeve cuffs.
The ModKid pattern is professionally put together and is full of helpful information and tips on selecting the right knit fabric for this project as well as sewing with knits. The tutorial illustrations are clear and easy to follow although I found the cutting instructions a little confusing because you have to reference a chart for cutting some pieces (and there is a dress version and a top version) in addition to the paper pieces. The pattern font type and size used in the written instructions make this pattern a breeze to read though.
Everything about the construction of this top went smoothly, but I opted to make one change to the pattern as I was sewing it together. Instead of cutting out separate pieces to sew to the bodice for the waistband elastic casing, I simply extended the length of the bodice by 2". I turned this 2" under and hemmed it. Then, when I attached the peplum, I matched the hemmed edge of the bodice to the raw edge of the peplum with right sides together and serged them together.
I'm not sure this method was really any easier than how the pattern described it, but in my mind, it saved me a couple of extra fabric cuts and steps of sewing!
For Ella's new Lexi Peplum Top, I sewed together a size 7 after consulting the pattern sizing chart and comparing those measurements to Ella. She's growing at an exponential rate lately, so even though the top might be a little roomy now, I know for sure it will fit her through summer.
This knit peplum top is so soft and moves easily with my active little girl, so I'm pretty sure it will be worn a lot!
I pretty much don't buy clothes for Ella anymore, so I whipped together a pair of hot pink Oakley Shorts (pattern by Sew Like My Mom) to wear with her new top. We won't look too closely at the welt pockets on the back. The left one is made using the pattern instructional video, while the right one I tried a different technique. They are similar, but the left is by far the better pocket!
