A sewVery Simple Candy Cane Ornament Tutorial

Need a few new tree decorations or want to add a little something extra to that wrapped gift?  Then I've got the project for you!  Today, I'll show you step-by-step how to make A sewVery Simple Candy Cane Ornament.

I consider myself to be a nostalgic crafter these days.  I love finding inspiration from the craft projects that my mom and I crafted together when I was a child!  It's so fun reliving the memories of us working together when I recreate one of her amazing projects.

And you guessed it!  My sewVery Simple Candy Cane Ornament Tutorial was inspired by decorations my mom made for our tree.  If you are like me, you are just starting to decorate your home and make special holiday gifts for loved ones, friends, neighbors, and teachers.  So, I am here to help you out! My Simple Candy Cane Ornaments are so quick to make and are perfect for the tree or to attach to a wrapped present. So grab your supplies, and let's get busy!

I've made two versions of this Simple Candy Cane Ornament.  The first uses double sided quilted fabric, twine (or ribbon), thread and pinking shears.  It's definitely the simplest of the two versions!

First, print and cut out the candy cane pattern from my Craftsy pattern shop (affiliate link) or draft up one of your own!

Next, lay out the pattern on your fabric and pin in place.  For the candy cane ornament made using double sided quilted fabric, you can cut out the shape using pinking shears or use your regular scissors to cut it out and then pink the edges later, whichever is easiest for you.

I cut some out a little bigger than the pattern so the finished candy cane ornament would be the size of the pattern once I pinked the edges.  This is totally optional!

The next step is not necessary, but I liked the simple detail.  Sew around the perimeter of the candy case using a 1/4 inch seam allowance.  Now, if you haven't already, pink the edges of the candy cane.

Finally, cut a piece of twine roughly 5" long, fold it in half, and attach the cut edges to the back side of the candy cane by sewing back and forth over the twine.  That's it!

Version 1 can even be made as a no-sew project by omitting the stitching around the edges and just hot gluing the twine to the back!  The perfect project to do together with your kids.

The second version requires the use two pieces of fabric and a piece of batting in addition to twine (or ribbon), thread, regular scissors and pinking shears.

For the candy cane made using batting in the middle, fold your fabric in half, place a piece of batting in the middle, pin the pattern in place, and cut out the fabric and batting all in one step using regular scissors.  You'll pink the edges after you sew the pieces together.

You should now have two pieces of fabric and one piece of batting cut out. Make sure they are laid out like this with one piece of fabric right side facing down, then the batting, and then the second piece of fabric on top with right side facing up.

Pin the pieces together.

For this next part, it is totally optional to use a walking foot when sewing to prevent the fabric from creeping, but I decided to forgo this and just use my regular sewing machine foot.  Any irregularities will be cut off when you pink the edges later.

Sew around the perimeter of the candy cane using a 1/4" seam allowance. Next, pink the edges, and then follow the instructions above for attaching the twine.

You'll have a few dozen of these whipped up in no time!  And if you like this sewVery Simple Candy Cane Ornament Tutorial, then you'll love my Santa Hat Ornament Tutorial, my Christmas Tree Tabletop Decoration Tutorial, and my Christmas Present Placemat Tutorial--more projects inspired by my mom!
